Crowns Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are artificial caps that cover damaged teeth to enhance structural integrity. Dental crowns can help restore teeth that are:

  • Broken
  • Chipped
  • Discolored
  • Misshapen
  • Worn down
  • Fractured
  • Weakened by a large filling
  • Severely decayed

Dental crowns are also used to complete dental implants and bridgework.

What are dental crowns made of?

Dr. Carlile offers a number of materials for dental crowns, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages.

  • Metal alloys: These crowns are crafted from a blend of metals. They are incredibly strong and are affordable. The downside is the aesthetics.
  • Resin: Resin crowns provide a realistic look and feel and are also affordable. However, they don’t last as long as other options, and they are subject to wear and fracture.
  • Porcelain covering metal: These crowns offer the strength of metal combined with the visual appeal of porcelain. They’re beautiful, but they can show a dark line if your gums recede.
  • Porcelain or ceramic: Porcelain and ceramic crowns provide the most realistic appearance, and they are a great option for those with metal allergies. However, they are a more expensive option.

What is the process for getting a crown?

Dr. Carlile begins with a thorough dental exam to determine if a crown is the right treatment option. If so, he completes any restoration work prior to beginning work on your crown.

Using a local anesthetic, Dr. Carlile begins by removing a portion of your tooth enamel to make room for the crown. If necessary, he uses a special dental material to build up your tooth to accept the crown.

Then, impressions or scans are made of your newly prepared tooth so the dental lab can craft your custom crown. You’ll receive a temporary crown to wear until the permanent version arrives.

When your permanent crown arrives, Dr. Carlile will remove your temporary crown and cement your new one into place.

How should I care for my new crown?

Once your crown is in place, it won’t require special care. Simply continue a healthy oral hygiene routine and schedule routine dental exams and cleanings.

To preserve your new tooth, avoid biting down on hard foods or objects, don’t eat foods that are excessively sticky, and never use your teeth as tools. Furthermore, if you detect a change or a problem with your crown, schedule an appointment with Dr. Carlile right away.
