Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants, which look and function just like natural teeth, have three components: the implant — which acts as the base — the abutment, and the crown.

The implant is made of metal and is anchored into your jaw bone. The abutment acts as a connector between the implant and the crown. The crown, which will be your new tooth, is the visible portion of the implant and is customized to blend in with the shape and shade of your surrounding teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants are an alternative to dentures or bridgework. There are several reasons why you might prefer dental implants over other methods.

Bridgework requires altering your natural teeth to serve as an anchor for the bridge. Dental implants, on the other hand, are placed without removing your natural tooth tissue.

Dental implants are a permanent solution. Dentures and bridgework will wear down and break over time and must be repaired or replaced.

Implants are also more comfortable than dentures. They require no adhesive, and they feel and function just like your natural teeth.

What’s the process for getting dental implants?

First, your dental specialist gives you local anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Once numb, your gum tissue is carefully opened to gain access to your jaw bone.

A pilot hole is drilled to allow the implant to be screwed into place. Once it’s in position, your gum tissue is closed and the healing process begins.

Once your bone tissue has fused to the implant, you’ll return. During your next appointment, the abutment is placed onto the implant.

Then, new impressions and images are taken to create your custom crown. When it’s ready, the crown is attached to the abutment.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants are a great option for many men and women, but the process does require you to have sufficient bone tissue to anchor the implant. During your initial consultation, you’ll be screened to ensure that dental implants are the best option for you. If you’re not a suitable candidate, additional options will be discussed with you.
